Golden Globes 2021: The Snubs And Surprises
11. Surprise: The Mauritanian - Best Actor In A Drama, Best Supporting Actress In A Motion Picture
The Mauritanian came out of nowhere with nominations for star Tahar Rahim and two time Globe and Oscar winner Jodie Foster. Centred around Rahim's character who is detained and imprisoned for years in the United States without any formal charges actually being brought forward, the film is somewhat of a sleeper hit which clearly managed to resonate with voters.
Their nominations have unavoidably resulted in some snubs elsewhere (the aforementioned Ellen Burstyn) but that doesn't mean they are undeserving themselves. Foster is exceptional in any role she takes up and this is her first nomination in nine years. Rahim is new to Globes recognition but his performance in this film and the subsequent nomination will boost his profile and give him more exposure.
At present, only a selection of critics have been able to see The Mauritanian in full so it is hard to judge it fairly, however the nominations for its stars will definitely help to bring more eyes to the film when it premiers later this month.
