Golden Globes 2021: The Snubs And Surprises
8. Snub: Minari - Everywhere Other Than Best Foreign Language Film
The controversy surround Minari is likely to only increase as its only nomination has appeared in the one category the filmmakers feel it doesn't belong. The story of a Korean family immigrating to the USA, Minari is warm and endearing and a brilliant film. Minari was hoping to be considered in the Best Film Drama category but due to the Globe's outdated guidelines, a film cannot both contend in Best Film Drama and Best Film in a Foreign Language.
Shut out by default in the best film race, Minari was vying for performance nominations for Steven Yeun and Youn Yuh-jung and writing and directing nominations for Lee Isaac Chung who based a lot of the film on his own experiences.
Unfortunately, Minari walked away empty handed which may seriously damage its wider appeal as other past films that contested in Best Film in a Foreign Language such as Parasite and Roma have been able to easily break into the other categories.
