Golden Globes 2021: The Snubs And Surprises
9. Surprise: Jared Leto - Best Supporting Actor In A Motion Picture
After Jared Leto swept practically every awards show out there for his supporting turn in Dallas Buyers Club seven years ago, he has been keeping far from critically acclaimed performances with such underwhelming entries as his appearances in Suicide Squad and Blade Runner: 2049.
As a result, no one considered him a viable threat in the supporting actor race this year for his role as a potential serial killer in The Little Things. A relatively uninspired police thriller, The Little Things was never going to be an awards magnet despite starring performances from Denzel Washington and Rami Malek.
Still, Leto managed to make the cut and he shouldn't be underestimated. His warped and socially bizarre performance here is the kind of work that feels reminiscent of Aaron Taylor-Johnson's performance in Nocturnal Animals that was ignored by most other award shows. Taylor-Johnson managed to upset Mahershala Ali and win the Globe so Leto might have a better chance than anyone is giving him credit for.
