Golden Globes 2021: The Snubs And Surprises

7. Surprise: Music - Best Film Comedy Or Musical

Promising Young Woman
Vertical Entertainment

This unfortunately, is not a good surprise. When the trailer for Music dropped a few months ago, the outrage was notable even if you yourself didn't feel the need to be angry. Written and directed by the musician Sia, Music follows Kate Hudson (also nominated) as she becomes the guardian of her sister who is autistic played by Maddie Ziegler.

Ziegler is not autistic and her portrayal is not exactly sensitive to those that are. Various groups and individuals found the portrayal and the film as a whole offensive and misguided and it is a shame that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has seemingly ignored such a reaction.

Sia herself responded to her critics in a particularly aggressive and dismissive way which, of course, doesn't affect the quality of the film but does eliminate any good will that the film may or may not have been made with. Hopefully this will be the last time it pops up in contention for awards.
