Gone Girl: 8 Easter Eggs & References You Might Have Missed
2. The Fugitive Parallels
Although she's been pretty meticulous in her framing of Nick, it gradually becomes apparent Amy is far from in the clear. She's not only got an intricate to-do list, but also needs to do all this without being recognised (or giving away she has a ridiculous amount of money on her person), leading to her completely altering her look. The whole appearance alteration is nothing new to thrillers, but one film that Gone Girl appears to have in its headlights is the beloved 1993 made-from-a-TV-show movie The Fugitive. On top of the parallels between Amy and Harrison Ford's journey, there's some interesting casting that ties together the two films. Sela Ward, who appears in Gone Girl as Sharon Schieber, the apparently vicious interviewer who Nick wows, also played Ford's on-screen wife in The Fugitive. Given her slight filmography this can be far from coincidence. The Fugitive is yet another movie that deals with mariticide that gets alluded to in Gone Girl - the previously mentioned Vertigo and The Night of the Hunter both also featured men who killed their wives. Fincher has never been one for sneaky references, suggesting he's attempting to point out his goals to meddle with the gender balance in movies; there's a lot of juxtaposition at play here, with Amy going much worse than these bad men ever did. Sadly, given all the talks of misogyny, this seems to have gone over many of the film's critic's heads.
