Trailers are a completely lost cause. There may be the odd enjoyable one, but most just serve to give a complete run-down of the plot. David Fincher's always had more control over the marketing of his movies than other A-list directors (look at Fight Club's PSAs) and while Gone Girl's may have given away a little too much (if you watched them pre-release they give away most of the major plot beats from the first hour), they do maintain the central mystery; not even suggesting Pike is alive, they serve to only perpetuate suspicions of Nick. There was, however, one little nod to the true nature of Amy's disappearance in the marketing campaign. Above the title on the posters featuring a back-to-the-camera Ben Affleck and the rolling news coverage Amy's eyes can be seen. A simple reading of this would be that she's watching events unfold from a 'better place'. Clouds, heaven, how boringly basic. However, notice the glaze on the poster around the news bars, implying this is actually on a TV; that also appears at the top around Amy's eyes. So they're a reflection in the screen; Amy is watching her husband slowly become crucified by the press, essentially giving away the film's massive rug-pull. Well played Fincher, well played.
