Fincher has always been a dab hand at casting every role from the stars to the one-liners perfectly, and Gone Girl is no exception: there's not a single performance here that sticks out as one-note or off, and everyone clearly brings their A-game. The most notable supporting performances are easily Carrie Coon as Nick's infuriated sister Margo, and Kim Dickens as the meticulous Detective Rhonda: each is an immensely entertaining portrait of a strong, well-developed female character. In addition, Neil Patrick Harris plays hugely against type as a seemingly creepy former acquaintance of Amy's, Patrick Fugit is a welcome presence as a young cop, and Emily Ratajkowski (who you might remember from Robin Thicke's infamous Blurred Lines video) is surprisingly good (and unsurprisingly incredibly sexy) in a brief role as one of Nick's Creative Writing students. With such a buffet of immense acting on display, it's easy to become wrapped up in the tale even during its more absurd moments.
