Guardians Of The Galaxy: 20 Easter Eggs & References You Must See
4. The Kree/Skrull War
The biggest future plot point signposted through Guardians Of The Galaxy is that classic Avengers storyline, the Kree/Skrull War. One of the earliest successful blockbuster events in the comics, story arc by Roy Thomas, Neal Adams and the Brothers Buscema expanded the scope of the superheroes to infinity and beyond, as they get caught in the middle of a centuries-old crusade between the militaristic Kree and the shape shifting Skrulls. It's also a hot mess, with a plot that was clearly made up as it went along and featuring numerous inconsistencies and story beats which are completely abandoned. Still, it's a classic of the comics canon, and a lot of seeds have been sown for it to turn up again later. Mainly that's in the introduction of the Kree themselves, who don't seem to have the best reputation amongst the various alien races that we meet across the course of Guardians Of The Galaxy. Still, people tend to hold them in higher esteem than they do Ronan The Accuser, who is regarded as a maniac fringe element who doesn't actually represent the opinions of the Kree Empire at large. As discussed, the Chitauri are the stand-ins for the Skrulls in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for legal reasons, so all the pieces are in place. Having already appeared on the galactic radar and been the target for invasion by the Chitauri once before, it'd make sense for Earth to be the battleground for this war between the two races, maybe in a future Avengers sequel? We'd also need Captain Marvel before then, since he plays a big part in ending the war, but with a half-dozen unannounced films on the slate up until 2022, anything's possible.
