So, Groot has a problem with understanding people, that much is clear. This fact also made for an incredibly funny moment when Rocket and Yondu were locked in the brig of the latter's ship following Taserface's mutiny.

A little while before, the mohawk-looking fin Yondu wears on his head, which powers his telekinetic arrow, had been destroyed. Therefore, if they were going to have a chance at a successful escape, he needed Groot to retrieve the spare one he had in his quarters.

Groot then proceeds to return with a desk, a weird, angry space creature, and a human toe, among other things. Like trying to explain something specific to, well, the tree-equivalent of a clueless toddler, Rocket and Yondu become increasingly more frustrated and befuddled until Groot finally manages to get it right.

It's a gag that was just long enough to reach peak hilarity, especially with the constantly increasing absurdity of everything Groot managed to get his hands on, but not too long that it became irritating for the viewer or felt like a waste of time. So, in other words, the perfect gag.
