1. More Complete Characters

There are a lot of things that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 did even better than its already stellar predecessor. However, none are quite as important than the characters of the film themselves. The characterization of each and every player in this film, be it big or small, is absolutely peerless.

The Guardians themselves are portrayed wonderfully. Moreover, this film did a stellar job at making the secondary player feel like a big deal as well, as they played a big role in contributing to our main heroes' character arcs.

We see a side of Star-Lord we've never seen before, all while he grows as both a protagonist and as a person; we get greater insight in regards to Drax's feelings through Mantis, with both characters coming of age in the process; the relationship between Gamora and Nebula, which was glossed over in the first film, is now given the spotlight, allowing the two siblings to make their peace with one another; and the parallels that were drawn between Rocket and Yondu were incredible.

Not only that, but the aforementioned secondary players were able to carve out some great character arcs all for themselves. Most notably, Yondu, who was essentially just a plot device in the previous movie and has now arguably become the single deepest and most tragic character that Guardians of the Galaxy has to offer.

The characters are so much better written and so much better developed this time around and considering that the entire film hinges on these characters, it is through them that Vol. 2 more than stands above the film that came before it.
