Because it had to introduce audiences to the scope of this world, it's perhaps not too surprising that the first film rarely stayed in one place for too long, planet-hopping so much that it never felt like it was beginning to get bogged down or stale.

With much of Vol. 2 taking place on Ego's planet, Gunn slows things down somewhat, and while his dedication to playing out these character-driven mini-arcs is somewhat admirable, it is at the expense of the original's more cohesive, fleet-footed feel.

The planets visited in the original also felt much more diverse and lived-in for the most part, though it goes without saying that Ego's planet was nothing short of a lush creation and the sequel's easy visual highlight.
