3. Yondu Dies

It was always quite likely that someone in the quickly expanding cast was going to be killed off, but even with that likelihood hanging over them, the moment Yondu sacrifices himself to save Peter is one of the most jaw-droppingly sad moments in the entire MCU to date.

Hell, it deserves to be up there with the best emotional moments in all of blockbuster history, because its impact is irresistible and devastating. It also switches the entire tone of the film, which had swung from silliness to swash-buckling adventure.

Suddenly, we're faced with this crushing gut-punch of a moment, not long after we've been treated to Star-Lord's Pac-Man transformation and Drax screaming at his sensitive nipples, and it works precisely because it comes out of nowhere.

As a negative, it also kills off the film's best character, but at least he gets a final moment worthy of his billing.
