Isn't it great to live in a world where Kurt Russell is officially a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe? This was the crowning jewel of Gunn's announcement. There were rumors floating around for months that Russell would be joining the cast and everyone's reaction was that it was perfect casting - even though they had no idea who he'd be playing. Now the rumors are confirmed and we can all get psyched to see what he brings to the role. Russell's filmography reads like a list of some of the greatest genre films ever made: he's starred in The Thing, Escape From New York, Tombstone, Big Trouble in Little Chine, and Death Proof to name but a few. He also had quite an impressive year in 2015 with the release of both Bone Tomahawk and The Hateful Eight. So how best to utilize such a charismatic and solid actor? The obvious answer would be the much-talked about role of Peter Quill's father, which Gunn confirmed would be revealed in the sequel. Right now, the character is still a mystery but we know for sure that it's not the comic book iteration of Quill's father, J'son Spartax. One smart prediction would be Starhawk, a former Guardian from the comic books. In Starhawk's complicated history, he is a sort-of psychic being whose meddling with time led to creation of the current roster of the Guardians. Other aspects of the character point to clues within the first film; Starhawk is a being of light and appears angel-like, the is an ancient being, and he has a history with Yondu. Add that up, and we may have found a candidate for Quill's father. However, making another bold prediction, this may also turn out to be the true villain of the film: how very Star Wars-y of them.
