Why?

Because he's not entirely necessary, and he's lost his own personal bodyguard. Groot's whole thing in the first movie was being Rocket's protector - not only in terms of physical power but in the balance he'd offer to his more impetuous decisions. With him now basically transformed into a child who requires protection himself, Rocket has no shield.

And crucially, it's also him that inspires Ayesha's thirst for vengeance against the Guardians when he steals power batteries from her people and insults them to boot. She might ultimately not win the day, but she might get her desire for specific desire against the wise-cracking raccoon.

The chances are, he will survive to be in a money-spinning spin-off with Groot, but still, there's a legitimate (if slight) worry.
