Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol 2 Review: 8 Ups & 3 Downs
1. Some Of The Goofy Ego Effects Don't Quite Work
For the most part, the effects work in Vol 2 is excellent. Groot looks great, Rocket looks great, the action feels real and the rendered environments are stunning to behold. But as predicted when Ego was announced as part of the film, the effects relating to him revealing his "true form" are a little ropey.
First, when Star-Lord turns on him and shoots him literally to pieces, there's a bit that shows him halfway through rebuilding his body that looks like effects student work, and then having his face manifest within the planet is just a little too far into silly waters.
Sure, it's supposed to be goofy, but the effects are just a little too ropey to really sell the joke, and the latter part feels way too much like the Goblin King sequence in Return To Oz.
And now to the positives...
