The first new Halloween movie in almost a decade finally hits cinemas this week, and while early reviews indicate it's a major return to form for John Carpenter's legendary series, it's certainly been a tough road getting to this point.
Like just about every other major horror franchise, Halloween has had its share of ups and downs over the years, from legitimately disturbing and expertly-executed moments of bone-chilling terror, to embarrassingly silly moments throughout the increasingly braindead (yet oddly fascinating) glut of sequels.
For better and for worse, the series is rarely boring, and if you actually bother to revisit the ten previous movies before catching the new one, you'll certainly find plenty of inventive, even demented weirdness to both savour and cringe at.
