Halloween: 8 Things We Need In The Next Film
5. Consequences For Michael
As evil a character as Michael Myers is, he's always been at his most terrifying when he is simply a man with a mask and a really sharp knife. Whereas previous sequels made him practically omnipotent and thus vastly less interesting, Halloween 2018 was wise enough not to.
It's why that long-take when Michael returns to Haddonfield is so great, because it perfectly captures the 'force of nature' that Carpenter initially wrote about all those years ago. Another way this grounded handling of Michael as a character can be seen in the new film is in how it deals with his wounds and scars. Whereas 1981's Halloween II just reset Michael back to normal after being stabbed in the eye by Laurie's coat-hanger during the climax of the first film, Halloween 2018 actually has Michael missing an eye for the entirety of the film because of this wound.
Any future films will need to take Micahel's wounds just as seriously. There was always something frustrating about Michael suddenly having regrown limbs and eyes in earlier sequels, and the next film would do well to avoid this. Michael's wounds and scars make him more intensely terrifying, if anything, because he carries on despite them.
