Halloween: Every Franchise Easter Egg And Reference Explained
6. The Silver Shamrock Masks And The Meta-Commentary - Halloween III: Season Of The Witch (1982)
Up until recently, Halloween III was frequently cast aside and referred to as the nadir of the franchise simply because it didn't feature Michael Myers. But in recent years, it's gotten a re-evaluation from fans and critics alike, with a great many now praising it as a stellar stand-alone film.
Turns out people like the new film's director David Gordon Green and co-producer Ryan Turek are among its most adamant fans, and they included some fun nods to the film itself. Most obviously, when Laurie first shows up outside of the house where she initially sees Michael, she tells some children to go inside and they are wearing the three Silver Shamrock masks that feature in Halloween III.
More subtly, the film also takes notes from Halloween III on how to deliver meta-commentary. Halloween III excels at delivering a commentary on the consumerism culture of America and how we've franchised Halloween, the holiday and the film series, to the point of lunacy.
Similarly, the new film has moments of this as well, most notably when Sherriff Hawkins says the line "Maybe we should be afraid of this night" after seeing what Michael did to the podcasters, for the film to immediately juxtapose that with a cut to dozens of children and parents all dressed up trick-or-treating.
It's subtle but it's definitely there and very intentional.
