Happy Death Day 2U Review: 4 Ups & 6 Downs
1. The Tame PG-13 Tone (Again)
You can argue that it's not really fair to complain about a movie sequel having a PG-13 rating when it's simply following the lead of what came before, but from the ground-up, this is a franchise that desperately needed an R rating.
Instead, both movies fail to make the most of their interesting concepts by delivering the lame aforementioned humour, mostly gore-free death scenes and a soft tone that just feels a little too teen-pandering.
Yes, there's a ton of money in PG-13 horror - as evidenced by the first film making $125+ million on a mere $5 million budget - but given the low-risk price tag of these films, there's not much of an excuse for not touting a more adult tone.
Just like the original, Happy Death Day 2U feels like a sanitised sketch of what could've been a far more entertaining R-rated gore-fest.
With all these criticisms in mind, though, there are certainly things to be entertained by in the sequel. Here's everything it gets right...
