Rita Skeeter is one of the most hateable characters in the wizarding world, and we first learn about her villainous ways when she criticises the Ministry’s response to the chaos at the Quidditch World Cup.

But her nasty form of journalism gets worse as the story continues. In ‘Rita Skeeter’s Scoop’, she hits a new low by publishing an article about Hagrid’s giant blood. Given the negative reputation of the giants, Hagrid receives a stack of hate mail and hides away in his hut, too ashamed to show his face.

During a trip to Hogsmeade, Harry, Ron, and Hermione encounter Rita in the Three Broomsticks. Unconcerned about the crowd of onlookers, Harry and Hermione lambast the journalist. But Rita couldn’t care less about what she’s done, which makes her even more detestable than she was before.

Soon after, the trio arrive at Hagrid’s hut, and – with some help from Dumbledore – they persuade Hagrid to come back to work. It’s an emotional scene involving plenty of tears from Hagrid as he listens to the comforting words of his friends.

Whilst The Goblet of Fire would still work without this chapter, Rita’s remarks about Hagrid demonstrate just how ruthless she really is.
