Harry Potter: 10 Heroic Acts Committed By Slytherins

4. Merlin – Promoted Muggles Rights And Created The Order Of Merlin

Merlin was hardly mentioned in the Harry Potter books. Aside from the occasional reference to the award known as the Order of Merlin, his only other appearance was in the form of a Chocolate Frog Card.

But like most wizards and witches featured on these cards, Merlin led a fascinating life. As well as being nicknamed the ‘Prince of Enchanters’, he was part of King Arthur’s court during the 10th century and a friend of Sir Cadogan (the famous knight with a portrait at Hogwarts.)

Merlin also founded the Order of Merlin – an organisation which promoted Muggle rights. Given Slytherin’s emphasis on pure-blood witches and wizards, the founding of such an organisation is not something you would expect from a Slytherin.

Over the centuries, the Order of Merlin changed from an organisation into an award for acts of valour, but Merlin’s consideration of Muggle rights is still highly admirable.
