Harry Potter: 10 Majorly Dumb Plot Holes You Never Noticed
1. Disarming Your Opponent Gives You Their Wand, But Only In The Last Book
What caused it: It comes from the book, but I've no idea how Rowling let this plot hole exist.
One of Deathly Hallow's strongest plot points was the notion of wand ownership, specifically that if you disarm a wizard you gain power over their wand. This was well set up with Harrys visit to Ollivander's in the Philosopher's Stone and tied various throwaway moments throughout the series into the story's finale.
Shame it doesn't make an ounce of sense.
The theory only works if you take the final book (or final two films) on their own. Throughout the series we've seen countless characters disarm each other, either in battle or training, which means wands must be changing owners more often than Hogwarts changes its towers. When you add on the fact that when you disarm someone you get all their wands (how else did Harry get the Elder Wand?), there must be one wizard out there with hundreds of wands under his control. Why didn't Voldemort just try for that?
This hole has no solution; the rules are too broadly drawn and built around the plots events. If you have to mean to take the wand, then how does Malfoy gain control of the Elder Wand? And if you have to use a spell, how come Harry gains control of Malfoy's just by snatching it? For a series that was notoriously well planned (just look at Snape), this key element feels a tad made up.
Dont worry though - the movies threw out much of these wand ownership rules in favour of whizzing fireworks, so this is only really a problem in the books. Still infuriating though.
There you have it - can you believe those plot holes made it through a book and movie series? Do you have a solution to one, or another error we've missed? Have your say in the comments below.
