Harry Potter: 10 Most Hated Characters Who Aren’t Villains

For the most part, the movie adaptations did an excellent job of bringing J.K. Rowling’s characters to life. Ginny, on the other hand, was lost in adaptation.

The bold, amusing, tough-natured witch in the books is replaced with a bland personality with no distinctive features. There’s nothing wrong with Bonnie Wright’s performance either, it’s just the writing of her character that’s poor.

There are several instances in the books – particularly in The Half-Blood Prince – when Ginny stands up to her older brothers. She isn’t afraid to put her foot down (rather like her mother) and she has a reputation as a powerful spellcaster. Whilst the movies do acknowledge Ginny’s knack for the Reductor Curse, you don’t get the impression she’s an especially powerful witch.

The other main issue is the lack of chemistry between Harry and Ginny. Again, the writing is at fault here. Their romance just comes out of nowhere and we’re expected to go with it. The Half-Blood Prince adaptation should have dedicated more time to their relationship. And, more broadly, the writers should have made Ginny more distinctive throughout the series.
