Harry Potter: 12 Best Supporting Characters
8. Alastor "Mad-Eye" Moody
The fourth professor to hold the post of Defence Against the Dark Arts instructor during the course of the series - in a fashion - the grizzled ex-Auror actually spent most of his first appearance locked in his own magical drunk by an imposter. Nonetheless, with Barty Crouch Jr managing to convince the whole wizarding world that he was the man in question for almost a year, Moody went on to become something of an inspiration for Harry throughout the series.
He is part of the reformed Order of the Phoenix in the book of the same name and sees his role preserved from page-to-screen, up to and including his demise in the opening sequences of Deathly Hallows - Part 1, where he is one of a handful of casualties during the Battle of the Seven Potters. The film preserves his sacrifice - and the grisly scene where Harry finds his magical eye nailed to a door in the Ministry of Magic.
