4. Minerva McGonagall (Transfiguration/Headmistress)
Professor McGonagall teaches Transfiguration and is head of Gryffindor House. She’s a formidable witch and a strict disciplinarian – you wouldn’t want to get caught mucking around in her classroom.
Yet she also has a kind-hearted nature. There are several occasions when Harry thinks he’s going to be punished by McGonagall, but instead, she treats him with kindness and sympathy.
What’s more, McGonagall’s rivalry with Umbridge is one of the most entertaining parts of The Order of the Phoenix. These two women simply loath each other. And, far from maintaining a professional relationship, McGonagall doesn’t hide her contempt at all. Indeed, she actually encourages Peeves to wreck parts of the castle when Umbridge is in charge.
McGonagall is also one of the most powerful witches in the series. As well as being outstanding at Transfiguration, she’s also a formidable duelist. She even fights against Voldemort during the Battle of Hogwarts.
