Albus Dumbledore is the greatest force for good in the Harry Potter series and one of the most famous individuals in the wizarding world. During his lifetime, he defeated Grindelwald, served as Chief Warlock on the Wizengamot, discovered the twelve uses of Dragon’s blood, and was regarded as the greatest Hogwarts headmaster of all time.

In The Deathly Hallows, he is made still more interesting by the unveiling of his backstory. And said backstory offers an insight into the entire Dumbledore family, not just Albus.

Following an incident with several Muggle boys, Ariana (Albus’s younger sister) became an emotionally-unstable witch who was unable to control her magic. Percival sought revenge and attacked the Muggle boys who had damaged his daughter.

He ended up in Azkaban as a result, and Kendra had to look after her children alone. Tragically, she was then killed by the mentally-unstable Ariana during one of her rages. This left Albus as head of the family.

Matters weren’t helped by the fact Albus and Aberforth’s relationship was far from ideal. Indeed, Aberforth did not approve of his brother’s relationship with Grindelwald, and during an altercation between the three young men, Ariana was killed.

As well as recounting this story to the main trio, Aberforth also took part in the Battle of Hogwarts during The Deathly Hallows. But above all, he demonstrated there was much more to the Dumbledore family than Albus’s reputation and achievements.
