The Black family mirror the Malfoys in terms of their fixation with their pure-blood heritage and their general hatred towards Muggle-borns and blood traitors. It’s hardly surprising, therefore, that almost all of them were placed in Slytherin House.

Sirius broke this tradition, however. Upon arriving at Hogwarts, he was placed in Gryffindor alongside his three friends – James Potter, Remus Lupin, and Peter Pettigrew. And far from following in the footsteps of his villainous family, he opposed the Dark Arts as a member of the Order of the Phoenix in both wizarding wars.

But he wasn’t the only one. Unbeknown to his older brother, Regulus Black also fought against Voldemort. He sacrificed his own life in order to steal one of the Dark Lord's Horcruxes. And Andromeda Black (Sirius’s cousin and sister of Bellatrix Lestrange) also went against her family’s values. Despite being sorted into Slytherin, she married a Muggle-born wizard (Ted Tonks) and worked alongside the Order of the Phoenix.

The Black family, therefore, are certainly not evil through and through. And several individuals actively opposed the Dark Lord and his followers.
