10. Rubeus Hagrid - Recklessness With Fantastic

Hagrid is a half-giant with a heart of gold. There really can't be any arguing that the gentle, imposing character often has the best of intentions. The first magical individual Harry properly meets, Hagrid remains a close ally throughout all of Harry's adventurers within Hogwarts.

Hagrid becomes, by year 3, the teacher of Care of Magical Creatures. His tenure never really seemed to settle well, starting with Malfoy getting injured (his own fault, of course) by a hippogriff, before moving on to the often maligned Blast-Ended Skrewts. Hagrid's fascination with dangerous magical creatures was always seen as endearing, if a little dangerous. However, a look into the past shows just how badly something like this could be.

Trusting to a fault, Hagrid was framed, as revealed by the diary of Tom Riddle, for the murder of Moaning Myrtle. Riddle, the heir of Slytherin, had unleashed the basilisk within the halls of the school to attack those of impure who had impure wizarding heritage.

Seeking to divert attention from himself, Riddle pointed the finger to Aragog, an oversized spider that Hagrid was keeping in his care. Despite denying the charge, Riddle's word was enough to expel Hagrid from the school. Aragog managed to escape, where he grew to full size within the Forbidden Forest, eventually attempting to feed Harry and Ron to his many offspring.

While Hagrid's actions weren't directly responsible, he did give the future Voldemort a scapegoat that allowed him to continue to flourish.
