Harry Potter: What Happened To Everyone Who Escaped Azkaban

8. Travers

Travers is not one of the most well-known Death Eaters, but he was by no means an insignificant character. He murdered Marlene McKinnon (a member of the original Order of the Phoenix) during the First Wizarding War and was then sent to Azkaban following his master’s downfall in October 1981.

As for the Second Wizarding War, there is some ambiguity about when he first escaped from Azkaban. In the books, he isn’t explicitly named as one of the ten Death Eaters who escaped in 1996, and he didn’t make a physical appearance until The Deathly Hallows. In the movie adaptations, however, he was one of the Death Eaters who attempted to retrieve the prophecy from the Ministry in The Order of the Phoenix.

Given he took part in the Battle of the Seven Potters in The Deathly Hallows, he was definitely one of many Death Eaters who escaped during the mass breakout in 1997. Later on, Travers also journeyed to the Lovegood’s home and attempted to capture Harry, Ron and Hermione after Luna’s father betrayed them.

His final appearance was towards the end of The Deathly Hallows when Harry, Ron and Hermione tried to break into Gringotts. Given that Hermione was disguised as Bellatrix, Travers joined up with our heroes and entered the famous wizarding bank alongside them. Under the cover of the Invisibility Cloak, Harry cast the Imperius Curse on Travers and essentially ordered him to stay out of sight.

Travers presumably took part in the Battle of Hogwarts, but Rowling never revealed his specific actions or whether or not he survived the conflict.
