5. Nobody Dies - Black Phone 2
Black Phone 2 is a mostly solid - if certainly "unnecessary" - sequel that one-ups the original premise by reinventing The Grabber (Ethan Hawke) as a Freddy Krueger-esque dream stalker.
And considering these films are centered around a serial killer antagonist, it's fair to assume we're going to see at least a couple of grisly deaths, right?
Well, not really.
The big, strange surprise of Black Phone 2 is that despite having a beefed-up ensemble cast compared to the original, not a single character dies in the main timeline of the movie.
The only death scenes featured in the sequel are flashbacks to The Grabber killing three missing boys and also Finney (Mason Thames) and Gwen's (Madeleine McGraw) mother Hope (Anna Lore). And no, The Grabber "dying" again doesn't really count.
In the contemporaneous story of the film, The Grabber doesn't kill a single person, even with so many potential victims in his midst, ensuring that for all its effective moments, Black Phone 2 feels strangely lacking in visceral stakes.
