3. The Middle Needle Drop - Supergirl
Supergirl is one of the year's most disappointing films to date, and no single moment caught more of the Internet's ire than the infamous needle drop during the final battle.
When Supergirl (Milly Alcock) rocks up to rescue her young charge Ruthye (Eve Ridley) from Krem (Matthias Schoenaerts) and his band of Brigands, we're treated to a slow-motion sequence in which Supergirl obliterates the bad guys while Ruthye looks on.
The scene is set to a bubblegum pop cover of Jimmy Eat World's anthemic banger "The Middle," performed by Kelty Greye and KidMotel, which just feels completely out of step with both the movie's general tone and the context of this fight scene.
Many viewers found it immensely jarring, while wondering why director Craig Gillespie didn't simply use the original Jimmy Eat World version instead.
Knowing that the filmmakers reportedly tried out 45 different songs while looking for a needle drop that worked, and that this is the choice they settled on - apparently at the behest of producer James Gunn - just makes it even more baffling.
