2. Riley Dies - Shelby Oaks
Chris Stuckmann's long awaited feature debut Shelby Oaks certainly had its effective moments despite its rough edges, yet many were left bouncing angrily off it with its harsh downer of an ending.
Protagonist Mia (Camille Sullivan) spends the film attempting to locate her missing sister Riley (Sarah Durn), and she eventually discovers that Riley has been held captive by followers of the incubus known as Tarion and forcibly impregnated with a child, to which she's recently given birth.
Mia subsequently rescues Riley from confinement, but that's not the end of the story.
A distraught Riley then attempts to smother her child, and when Mia tries to stop her, Riley ends up pushed out of a window during the struggle.
She survives the fall only to be immediately devoured by hellhounds, the result of which is shown in grisly detail.
While downbeat endings are by no means inherently bad, in this case many were left disappointed that Riley - a rape victim who'd evidently already suffered plenty - was quite literally thrown to the wolves so cruelly.
This scene upended the movie's tone in an unpleasant way, especially with the lingering emphasis on how brutally Riley was killed.
