Emerald Fennell's loose adaptation of Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights certainly rubbed many die-hard fans of the source novel the wrong way, though Fennell certainly made her intentions clear from a much-despised opening scene.

The film kicks off with a public hanging, where the group of onlookers - including a young Cathy (Margot Robbie) - watch in awe at the hanging man's... engorged member, before the scene descends into a full-on orgiastic celebration.

Even accepting that the "death erection" is a very real, well-documented physiological response during hangings, many felt that the scene played as cheap shock value while adding little of substance to the film.

Fennell, for her part, stated that she intended for the shocking opening to set the tone for the movie's remainder, and in that respect she certainly succeeded - even if the film remains one of the most polarising literary adaptations of recent years.
