Earlier in August, a rumour did the rounds regarding the upcoming film's plot details as well as Lionsgate's plans for a Hellboy Cinematic Universe. While we're yet to see anything that validates those reports, it's obvious that Lionsgate will be banking on Hellboy to become a big franchise. Those older films weren't exactly cult hits, after all - they had a massive box-office draw to boast of.
Anywho, seeing as how cinematic universes rule the day currently (for better, or for worse), it makes sense that Lionsgate would have designs of their own. Hellboy's universe is certainly more than just the character, with Abe Sapien and the rest of the B.P.R.D. having commanded their own team books and solo series in the past. Then you have to factor in other heroes, like Lobster Johnson, and how they could potentially impact the world. It's all really exciting stuff.
Heck, next month Dark Horse will be releasing a Hellboy prequel focussing on Professor Broom and the founding of the B.P.R.D., as well as his earliest interactions with Rasputin. With the history the universe has it's easy to envision Lionsgate mining stories for years to come, and really, with a universe as good as this one, who can blame them?
