Holmes & Watson Review: 2 Ups & 6 Downs

3. The Awful Timely "Humour"

Because Holmes & Watson is a movie releasing in 2018, it of course has to be filled with "ironic" contemporary humour rather than just committing to its period.

In addition to the abundance of incongruous modern music, there's a cringe-worthy gag in which the duo takes a selfie with Queen Victoria (Pam Ferris), and Rebecca Hall's doctor character makes frequent, embarrassingly on-the-nose references to Donald Trump, while mocking the American political system and their definition of "freedom."

This is one of those movies that clearly should've existed in a comedic vacuum, but instead it strains itself to feel current and ends up not only seeming desperate but also instantly dating itself in the process.
