Holmes & Watson Review: 2 Ups & 6 Downs

1. Etan Cohen's Terrible Direction

In addition to his awful script, Etan Cohen (Get Hard) confirms with his second directorial effort that he should stick to writing screenplays.

In a year that offered up visually compelling comedies such as Game Night and Blockers, Holmes & Watson's workmanlike lack of visual flair just doesn't cut it.

In addition to the boring, shot-reverse-shot direction, countless scenes have re-dubbing blatantly visible - especially those involving Kelly Macdonald - and with this being the first Ferrell-Reilly team-up not directed by Adam McKay, his presence is sorely missed.

There's nothing basically appealing or fun about the way scenes are put together, forcing even those few moments that do work to fight against the comatose direction.

Holmes & Watson is an undeniable failure, then. But there are a couple of positives which just barely prevent it from being the very worst film of 2018...
