Holmes & Watson Review: 2 Ups & 6 Downs

Ups...

2. The Boxing Scene Is Genuinely Funny

There's a single set-piece in the film that actually evokes a few honest laughs, and that's when Holmes ends up at a boxing arena facing off against WWE superstar Braun Strowman (who, amusingly enough, is named "Brawn" here).

The sequence also features a fun cameo from a hook-handed Steve Coogan, a decent joke about PPV sports and male bonding rituals, and blink-and-you'll-miss-them appearances from legendary combat ring announcers Michael and Bruce Buffer.

It's hardly the epitome of smart comedy, but it's a rare scene in the movie where all the elements of filmmaking are actually trying and manage to come together somewhat successfully.
