How Freddy Krueger Became A Joke In 10 Easy Quotes

4. €œWhat€™s wrong Joey, feeling tongue tied?€ €“ Part 3 (1987)

Here we have Joey, a horny teenage boy who doesn€™t talk. Freddy invades his dreams and seduces him by first appearing as a voluptuous nurse. Just as everything seems to be going swimmingly, Freddy uses his tongue to tie Joey to the bed. The mattress underneath gives way to a fiery pit of flaming fire, leaving Freddy€™s newest victim roasting above the flames. Mr. Krueger delivers a quip referencing not only Joey€™s inability to call for help, but also the literal tongues that are holding him in place. He€™s literally tongue-tied. Now, let's step back for a moment before this departure becomes so grand, we can€™t remember where we came from. We began with €œThis is God€ and an innocent girl getting brutally ripped open by an invisible intruder. We have arrived at €œFeeling tongue tied?€ and a boy is tied to the bed with tongues. Things have clearly gone off on a tangent. Now that Freddy is fun, that is to say, now that a child murderer who was burnt alive and continues to perversely massacre teenagers is fun and enjoyable for the whole family, he can become a hit Halloween costume for all the kiddies! The same kiddies that this character was originally trying to murder, yay! So, we ask why? Why would such a frightening, depraved, repugnant character be made into a clown and so embraced by society? For that answer, we must dig further.

I have a keen, almost obsessive fascination with the macabre. It has lead me from a quiet life growing up in a small town to where I am now; creating horrific works about horrific things in many different mediums including films, short stories and essays. I live life by a simple motto: learn to like the dark, cause eventually, it'll come for all of us (lightening flashes and thunder claps)... but it ain't so bad.
