Hugh Grant: 5 Awesome Performances And 5 That Sucked

4. Rev. Giles Horrox, Hotel Heavy, Lloyd Hooks, Denholme Cavendish, Seer Rhee, Kona Chief - Cloud Atlas

Props to Hugh Grant for trying something complete and utterly different with Cloud Atlas, but no - it didn't quite work. Cloud Atlas clung to the difficult notion that several actors would play several different characters across the span of time, and the movie saw Grant - an unlikely addition to the cast if ever there was one - in six different roles: that of Giles Horrox, a "Hotel Heavy," Lloyd Hooks, Denholme Cavendish, Seer Rhee and a Kona Chief. Cloud Atlas required its actors to adopt heavy make-up and prosthetics in order for them to portray said characters. Sometimes this worked, and sometimes it didn't. In Grant's case, it was often hard to tell that it was even him on-screen - and we don't mean that in a good way, really. The weirdest role, that of a tribal chief, required him to look like something of a rejected Avatar character, made up in extensive war paint. So very weird.
