Hugh Grant: 5 Awesome Performances And 5 That Sucked
3. Samuel Falkner - Nine Months
Nine Months is a bad movie, plain and simple. Which means that, no matter how hard Grant seems to try throughout to establish something of a "performance," he can't seem to nail it. Playing a child psychiatrist who desperately doesn't want children, his character - Samuel Falkner - suddenly discovers that his girlfriend, played by Julianne Moore, is pregnant. You can pretty much fill in the gaps from then on in for this by the numbers flick. The worst thing is that Grant can't seem to get to grips with the breezy, slapstick tone of the film, which kind of makes him look... well, stupid? This is the kind of movie that makes you feel sorry for the people involved, and both Grant and Moore come out looking awkward and embarrassed. Presumably Grant fired his agent after the travesty that was this film (and then re-hired his agent for the next two movies on our sucky performances list).
Sam Hill is an ardent cinephile and has been writing about film professionally since 2008. He harbours a particular fondness for western and sci-fi movies.
