The Hunger Games: 10 Nagging Questions Answered

8. Are Katniss And Peeta The Only Previous Winners To Have The Slightest Slither Of A Conscience?

The premise of The Hunger Games is a statement on modern society; is this where reality television will lead? Will the world ever get to the point where we don't care about the slaughter of children if it makes for decent entertainment? Obviously, the leading pair do care. Both Katniss and Peeta show their repulsion to the society that they inhabit, and on a number of occasions, they rebel against the needless deaths that the Capitol just doesn't care about. It just seems that only a few people are unhappy with this world, though: why are Katniss and Peeta - and Haymitch if he's pushed for an answer - the only contestants we see that show disdain for the Hunger Games? We see the world through Katniss's eyes, and thus we don't see all that much about what the others think; more to the point though, District 12 is the furthest from the Capitol. They're the poorest and the worst off. There are richer districts, closer districts, and districts who take the competition more seriously (more on that later). And it's the brasher personalities from these places that dominate the arena, right? Most keep their head down simply because it's the easiest thing to do - and anyway, there are those worse off than them. They're all pretty poor, but it's no wonder the revolution is born from the poorest, most isolated place in Panem.
