Hustlers Review: 8 Ups & 3 Downs

2. Constance Wu

Jennifer Lopez Constance Wu Hustlers
STX Films

It wouldn't be right not to talk about how great Constance Wu is in a role that is clearly not the most charitable in the film but which is also obviously the most important. This is Constance's story, because it was she who "turned rat" on her fellow hustlers in real life and it's she who is being interviewed.

Hers is also the most compelling story, because like the Kid in Magic Mike, she's effectively introduced into a whole new world (though she has some experience elsewhere) and we get to see everything through her wide, enthusiastic eyes. That's why there's so much of an instant mythology around J-Lo's character (more of which soon), because Wu's Destiny (real name Dorothy) TELLS us there is.

Wu is charming and funny without having to rely on jokes, she's cut-throat when she needs to be, but she never gives up any of her humanity and she deserves every accolade that comes her way.
