Hustlers Review: 8 Ups & 3 Downs
1. Jennifer Lopez's Performance
At times, Jennifer Lopez has been something of an easy target in film criticism circles, but she's absolutely brilliant here. Because of the way the film is framed, we are introduced to her as a rock star at the absolute top of her game (and her first dance sequence is positively viscerally affecting) and it's pretty much impossible not to absolutely drink her magic in.
She's compelling and charming and while you get the sense that we're being set up for her being a cross between Miranda Priestly, Gordon Gekko and Jordan Belfort, that never comes. Instead, she meshes her energy with a maternal spirit and a warmth that means she picks up strays and sees the best in them.
Yes, she has a skewed image of the people she rips off, but she's never presented as a real monster.
And now to the negatives...
