In Defence Of Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness
7. It Was Far From Formulaic
One of the more consistent criticisms that has been thrown at Marvel Studios and the MCU over the years is that the franchise has fallen into something of a rhythm. There is a formula that, while generally guarantees success, has worn thin with many.
Doctor Strange himself has been no stranger to this criticism, with his origin story and first movie drawing direct comparisons to Iron Man. However, there can be absolutely no such accusations thrown at the first MCU movie of 2022.
Without question, this is the weirdest, most bizarre, and most unique movie in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The rule book was completely thrown out of the window, Sam Raimi brought in his signature style, and the franchise may never be the same again.
Since the end of Phase Three, Marvel Studios has been toying with new ideas and trying to broaden the franchise’s horizon, but this was the first true success in this regard. Part horror, part superhero, and 100% unlike anything else.
