Independence Day 2: 10 Reasons Why Resurgence Might Actually Be Good

9. A Dearth Of Decent Action Driven Sci-Fi Flicks

While films like Interstellar and The Martian have done extremely well - and are worthy of every bit of praise they have received - there has been a real lack of fun, action driven science fiction movies in recent years. These were abundant in the mid to late 90s and early 2000s, but of late, they seem to have dried up. Oh, there's always one or two around, but not the wealth of guilty pleasures we had in years past. ID4 (as the original Independence Day came to be known) was very much one of those guilty pleasures. It wasn't about to win any Oscars, and detractors pointed to the ridiculous ending and the over-reliance on just blowing up famous monuments to get a reaction out of viewers, but the fact was that it was a fun popcorn movie. While Marvel films do have some similar qualities, there aren't a lot of fun sci-fi popcorn flicks these days. Films like Transcendence and Lucy tried to aim high (and while Lucy had some admirable qualities, Transcendence was a not-so-hot mess) but missed the mark. Tom Cruise's Oblivion and Edge of Tomorrow were both very well done, but were a little more serious, less action-y. So there's a definite niche to fill here.
