Independence Day: Resurgence - 8 Reasons It's The Worst Movie Of Summer 2016

1. ...Well, Aside From Setting Up A Sequel

OK, proper spoilers in this entry. You have been warned.

In the build-up to Resurgence's release, Emmerich talked about the film lightly sets up a third movie, suggesting maybe a few hints to further conflict. He's clearly never done the sequel game before, because this set-up is a bit more than "hints"; the movie's end is a painfully blunt cliffhanger that leaves everything unresolved and actively nullifies the conflict of the previous two hours; instead of being destroyed, the big ship is simply recalled at the last minute and one of the few interesting plot points - the existence of a galactic resistance - is revealed to be nothing but set-up for more adventures.

This "sequel-bait in favour of a good base movie" manner of filmmaking is incredibly common nowadays (most of the terrible 2016 movies I've already alluded to did it pretty heavily), but this is one of the worst examples, actively insulting the audience for bothering to sit through the whole thing.

It really burns that the actual idea it's selling - humans take the fight to the aliens - is infinitely more interesting than anything we got in the original and, when you think about it, really should have been what Number 2 was; we could have developed intergalactic travel using the alien tech and found ourselves in the middle of a galactic debate wholly unprepared. Instead, we got a raft of needless set-up that, thanks to being delivered with Brent Spiner's overbearing excitement and total lack of fear, means Part 3 is primed to repeat the same unengagement problems from here.
