Indiana Jones & The Dial Of Destiny Review: 6 Ups & 4 Downs
3. Phoebe Waller-Bridge & Mads Mikkelsen Provide Solid Support
Harrison Ford is near enough the co-lead of this movie, given the size of Phoebe Waller-Bridge's role as his goddaughter Helena Shaw, and despite all the petulant whining from certain quarters of the Internet about her casting, Waller-Bridge does a great job with the material.
Waller-Bridge has a sass and confidence which makes the ultra-capitalistic Helena one of the series' more intriguing female characters to date - she's not a love interest (obviously), she's not a damsel-in-distress, and she's not really Indy's ally for much of the movie.
She's got her own emotional baggage to carry while being driven primarily by money, ensuring her dynamic with Indy is entertainingly volcanic.
And then there's Mads Mikkelsen, who plays the film's primary villain, ex-Nazi Jürgen Voller. Can you think of any other actor more born to play a Nazi villain in an Indiana Jones movie?
Though in the Indiana Jones tradition Voller isn't a particularly intimidating or physical antagonist, he's got more interesting motives than you might initially expect, and Mikkelsen's eerie screen presence brings an effortlessly sinister quality to the fore.
