After escaping from Elihas Starr's lab, we would have got even more backstory about what led to the original Ant-Man and The Wasp taking down the missile from the first film. It was during that fateful mission the latter went subatomic and disappeared into the Quantum Realm but test audiences didn't respond well to the lengthy sequence in the follow-up so it was cut down.

That's also why the two heroes weren't quite so directly involved in what happened to Ghost.
