Insidious: The Last Key - 2 Ups & 7 Downs

2. There's No Internal Logic

This is a frequent criticism of modern horror movies and the Insidious franchise is certainly no exception: the supernatural shenanigans throughout The Last Key have no clear, defined logic, which makes it even tougher to care about whatever nonsense is going on.

The very best horror movies lay down a clear set of rules about what can and cannot happen, and how the human characters can interact with the supernatural ones, but as with most of the previous Insidious films, there's basically a "throw everything at the wall and see what sticks" approach to the otherworldly mechanics.

The Further is an intriguing locale for sure, but the movie's array of paranormal phenomena sadly doesn't amount to much if you're constantly asking yourself why it's happening in the first place.

Some might defend the movie's slippery supernatural logic as willfully defying human understanding, but it's clear the filmmakers just didn't put much effort into it because they know the teen crowd doesn't care.
