Insidious: The Last Key - 2 Ups & 7 Downs

Ups...

2. Lin Shaye Steals The Show, As Usual

Insidious The Last Key Lin Shaye
Blumhouse

As regular as clockwork, Lin Shaye once again steals the show as elderly parapsychologist Elise Rainier, and to the filmmakers' mild credit, they have at least leaned into the character's popularity, effectively making her the series' protagonist.

A 74-year-old woman playing the lead in a horror franchise is virtually unheard of, and Shaye once again does fine work with what she's given, but let's be honest, she's not exactly given much, and deserves far better.

Shaye's presence keeps the film from falling into terrible territory, but far too much of the film still has her slowly walking around dingy locales or re-explaining things the audience has already been shown.
